A sequel to my painting "Lives Hanging in the Balance," this work shows the inevitable outcome of a multistory apartment building in San Francisco's hot real estate market. Given the ever-increasing prices of housing in the Bay Area, what does the future bring for the low income and immigrant tenants who live here? Yet this painting isn't only about the City's housing and economic crisis; it also points to its history of sex trafficking. The comforter above the sign has teddy bears scattered throughout the colorful squares; it belongs to a child. This Chinatown building is just a feet away from Donaldina Cameron Alley, which pays homage to the Presbyterian missionary who rescued hundreds of young Chinese girls from sex slavery in this neighborhood during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
