A Moment in Time
A woman in San Francisco's Chinatown dries her laundry on the exterior fire escape and balcony of her home. People have used the wind and sun to dry their clothing since the dawn of human history. Yet this practice, the greenest technology, has become unusual due to the affordability and preference for time-saving driers. Due to worries about diminishing property values, many homeowners associations have banned the use of clotheslines and apartment building owners have evicted tenants for hanging their wash in public view. This has led to "Right to Dry" laws that offer protections for drying laundry outdoors. As of 2019 there were 20 Right to Dry states in the US, of which California is one. Acrylic on canvas.
