A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand
Inspired by Abraham Lincolnâs quote (also used as the title), this painting suggests the gravity of the current political climate. Black and white pigeons on the window ledge allude to the original topic of slavery. The brick wall of an historical US fort heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina symbolizes the âhouse dividedâ by political infighting. In the foreground, pigeons strut self-importantly. Their red and blue feet indicate alignment with the Democrat and Republican parties (donkey and elephant silhouettes mark the blue and red banners respectively, identifying each party), yet the US flag rises above to create the appearance that all are unified. Acrylic on Canvas.
